Movie Review - Sara'S (2021)

Above all, the film Sara'S has gone out of its way to depict the family as a Christian family. The Bibles, the rosaries, and the exclamations "Holy Mother of God" loudly portray the family to be devoutly Christian. 'Abortion' in the film is treated as a 'religious superstition' that needs to be overcome. However, the film is miles away from addressing the real issue of abortion.

The film has failed to touch the crux of the topic, "is there life in the womb?". As a member of the Christian community, I was expecting the "Christian" mother-in-law to make a classic filmy statement, "please don't murder the baby", and the "protagonist" to say something about the baby being a clump of cells, however, the film failed to do even that.

The film revolves around a young woman, an aspiring film director named Sara. Since childhood, Sara has not wanted to give birth. She meets and marries Jeevan who shares the same desire. Supported by her husband, Sara finally finds a producer willing to finance her film, however, things take a turn when the couple finds out that they are going to have a child. Sara now has to decide between keeping her child or her career, as her husband too is having a change of heart and wanting to keep the child on learning of the pregnancy. She ultimately chooses to abort the child and carry on with directing her film, a decision in which her husband supports her, and so does her devoutly Christian family.

As a Christian watching the film, I was deeply disappointed at the severe misrepresentation of the Church stand and a poor understanding of Christian morals. The film has attacked a straw man when it comes to the issue of abortion. It was a film without a climax, it was like watching a biopic on Sania Nehwal, with no mention of badminton, or a biopic on MS Dhoni with no mention of Cricket.
